How to Use a Cane On the Stairs

How to Use a Cane On the Stairs – In this video Cindy, PT with Adaptive Equipment Corner demonstrates how to use a cane going up and down the stairs.

Going up the stairs

1.Place the cane in the opposite hand of the hand rail. If there is no handrail, put the cane on the opposite side of the weak/injured leg.

2.Always lead up with the good/strong leg first

3.Leave the cane down on the floor or step you are leaving with the weak/injured leg

4.Put weight through the hand on the rail and on the cane in order to support the weak/injured leg, as you step up with the good leg, followed by the cane and the weak/injured leg

Going down the stairs

1.Place the cane in the opposite hand of the rail. If there is not a hand rail, the cane goes on the opposite side of the weak/injured leg.

2.Place the cane down on the step below

3.Followed by the weak/injured leg, then the good leg
